Skidompha Library’s Chats with Champions will feature acclaimed television producer, author and humanitarian John Marshall at 10 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 11, according to a news release from the Damariscotta library.
Imagine encountering tiny elephants on a beach. Or kayaking with a horse as your paddling partner. Those are only two of hundreds of whimsical, touching, and humorous images on Marshall’s Instagram page, Sunset Selfies (instagram.com/sunsetselfies).
Marshall is a nine-time Emmy Award-winning television producer. He is the creator of the immensely popular Instagram page Sunset Selfies that features his cardboard cutouts against the setting sun. Marshall created his first Sunset Selfie on Frye Island in 2015, cutting a beer box into an alligator, donning it on his head, and taking a timed photograph. From then until now, Marshall has added captions, both enhancing the photos and revealing the cartoonist he dreamed of becoming when he was a boy, according to the release.
His artwork has been featured in publications worldwide from Rolling Stone Brazil to The Times of India to The Kelly Clarkson Show on national television. He is the author of the critically acclaimed Random House memoir “Wide-Open World”, the inspiring story of his family as they volunteered their way around the globe, living in a monkey sanctuary in Costa Rica, teaching English in rural Thailand, and caring for orphans in India. Signed copies of “Wide-Open World” are available at Sherman’s Maine Coast Book Shop.
His true passion is his work with orphaned children around the world. As a storyteller, filmmaker and fundraiser, he has helped raise more than $2 million for orphan projects since 2014. His most ambitious project yet is a global initiative called Teach Her, a service organization providing college education to orphaned girls. Advocating for some of the most vulnerable members of our human family, Marshall hopes to involve many like-minded supporters to lift these girls up and change the future one child at a time.
All those wishing to attend this online Chat, through Zoom, can sign up online at skidompha.org. Those attending will be emailed a link prior to the event.
