A fire that broke out early Friday afternoon at the Maine Correctional Center in Windham was contained to a small area in a housing unit for men.
Four people were taken to a hospital because of concerns related to smoke inhalation, but no staff or residents were injured, according to Anna Black, spokesperson for the Maine Department of Corrections.
Black said the unit where the fire started was evacuated, but the fire was quickly contained and extinguished. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
The correctional center at 17 Mallison Falls Road includes medium- and minimum-security facilities for men and women. It houses 650 incarcerated men and women and includes a 96-bed minimum- and community-custody facility for women called the Southern Maine Women’s Reentry Center, according to the Department of Corrections.
