WATERVILLE — Throughout Maine Catholic Schools Week, students at Mount Merici Academy collected items to be donated to the Mid-Maine Homeless Shelter.
As part of the initiative, students in each grade were given a different item to donate, including tissues, toilet paper, razors, shaving cream, toothpaste, shampoo, conditioner, deodorant, soap, and socks. The items are being used to assemble personal care kits for shelter residents, according to a news release from Dave Guthro, communications director, Roman Catholic Diocese of Portland.
The drive for the shelter has become an annual collection that inspires members of the school community to act.
The homeless shelter at 19 Colby St. is not just a bed and a meal for guests. The shelter has case managers that work with clients to create an action plan to obtain stable housing and prevent homelessness in the future.
For more information or to donate to the shelter, call 207-872-8082 or visit shelterme.org.
As an Ursuline school, Mount Merici is committed to teaching students the Ursuline Sisters’ tradition of Serviam or service. The students not only do service projects during Catholic Schools Week, it is part of the curriculum all year, according to the release.
