The Camden Public Library’s Friday Film Club will meet at 4 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 19, on Zoom to discuss two powerful and critically-acclaimed films that explore the ongoing struggles of African Americans to gain social equality. The selections are “Loving” and “I Am Not Your Negro.” Email jpierce@librarycamden.org to request details for how to view the films and to receive a Zoom link to participate. You should plan on viewing the film before the club meeting.
“Loving” is the story of Richard and Mildred Loving, a couple whose arrest for interracial marriage in 1960s Virginia began a legal battle that would end with the Supreme Court’s historic 1967 decision invalidating state laws prohibiting interracial marriage. Ruth Negga earned an Oscar nomination for Best Actress, while Joel Edgerton received a Golden Globes nomination for Best Actor.
“I Am Not Your Negro” is a gripping visual essay narrated by Samuel L. Jackson and inspired by James Baldwin’s unfinished manuscript “Remember This House,” a collection of notes and letters written by Baldwin in the mid-1970s. The memoir recounts the lives of his close friends and civil rights leaders Malcolm X, Martin Luther King Jr., and Medgar Evers. The film won a Best Documentary BAFTA and received an Oscar nomination for Best Documentary Feature.
The Friday Film Club meets monthly on third Fridays and is open to anyone who enjoys critically-celebrated movies, inspiring documentaries, and foreign films. For more details visit the events calendar on librarycamden.org.
