SKOWHEGAN — It wasn’t that the Skowhegan Area High School boys basketball team was doing a lot wrong in the first half Friday night. It was more like, Maine Central Institute was shooting so amazingly well.

“Man, can they miss a shot?” Skowhegan forward Kyle LePage said, recalling his thoughts as the Huskies made bucket after bucket to build a 15-point lead.

Then, everything changed, and it changed quickly.

After spotting MCI that 15-point lead late in the first half, the RiverHawks flipped the game, holding the Huskies to just three field goals in the second half to pull away for the 64-45 win in the quarterfinals of the central Maine Class A/B tournament.

No. 2 Skowhegan (11-2) will host No. 6 Winslow (7-5) Tuesday at 7 p.m. in the semifinals. No. 7 MCI ends the season at 7-7.

Down 34-19 with 1:43 left in the first half, the RiverHawks went on a 19-0 run. Skowhegan took its first lead of the game with 1:32 left in the third quarter on a LePage free throw.

“Credit (MCI) for hitting shots,” Skowhegan coach Tom Nadeau said. “We were letting them get too comfortable. We said, listen we’re in good shape. We had to put some pressure on them.”

Skowhegan outscored MCI 40-11 in the second half, taking advantage of its size advantage to point the ball inside to Kyle LePage (20 points), Adam Savage (16 points) and Collin LePage (7 points). When MCI collapsed defenders into the lane, the RiverHawks found their outside shot, with Levi Obert (16 points) making four threes, and Savage making a pair.

“We were playing with intensity, and we started clicking,” Kyle LePage said. “It was a great team win.”

Ahead 40-37 going to the fourth quarter, Skowhegan scored the first 18 points of the fourth to push its lead to 58-37.

Even if they faced no defense, MCI would’ve been hard-pressed to shoot as well as they did in the first half. The Huskies were 7 for 9 from the floor in the first quarter, and didn’t fall off much in the second. Timur Sabic had the hottest of the hot hands, scoring 12 points in the second quarter as MCI pushed its lead to as much as 15 points, 34-19, on a deep Sabic three with 1:43 to play in the half. Sabic finished with 26 points, just seven in the second half.

With their height advantage, the RiverHawks dominated the boards, grabbing 38 rebounds to MCI’s 20, including 19 offensive. Collin LePage had 15 rebounds (9 offensive). Savage grabbed 12 boards.
