Voters at Burnham’s annual Town Meeting on Saturday will consider approving a proposed $660,295 budget as part of the 60-article warrant.
The business portion of the meeting will be held at 1 p.m. at the fire station at 89 Troy Road, with elections to be held from 2-7 p.m. Friday at the town office.
In elections, Ricky Basford is running unopposed for a 3-year term as selectman, assessor and overseer of the poor. He would replace Wayne Mitchell, who chose not to run for reelection.
Deputy Clerk Cay Jones and Susan King are running for a 1-year term for town treasurer. King, who was appointed town treasurer, is serving in that position in an interim capacity.
Incumbent highway Commissioner Charlie King is running unopposed for his seat. A 3-year term for cemetery sexton is open. Cemetery Sexton Franz Spiegel took out papers for the position but did not return them by the town’s deadline. However, Spiegel wants to be elected to the position and voters may write in his name on the ballot.
Jones said the budget voters approved last year was $929,000, but not all of that was spent. The reason for the large number is that the town at the time didn’t know how much it would have to do to bring the transfer station up to code and a new snow plow contractor had to be chosen.
At the Town Meeting, voters will consider requests including whether to spend $21,600 for fire protection, $9,100 for firefighter payroll, $16,000 for insurance, $35,000 for roads and patching, $117,023 for road resurfacing, $105,000 plus revenues for the transfer station, and $208,000 for snow removal, sanding and salting.
Residents also will be asked to spend $100,000 for town officers’ salaries, $9,000 for office equipment, $35,000 plus revenues from costs on liens for incidental expenses, $10,000 for the exterior of the municipal building and $3,000 for the interior. Other requests include $13,000 for cemeteries, and $10,000 for work on the erosion problem at the town boat landing and public beach.
