No one was injured in a fire that broke out in an apartment building at the former Brunswick Navy base Tuesday afternoon.
The fire, reported at 4:30 p.m., broke out in an apartment at 739 Pegasus Street at Pegasus Landing on Brunswick Landing. The fire spread to a second apartment before the firefighters extinguished it around 5:30 p.m.
Brunswick Fire Chief Ken Brillant said firefighters found fire between a lower level ceiling and a second-story floor in the two-story building, which allowed the fire to spread to a second apartment. The fire damaged pipes and radiant heating in the floors and walls, he said. The fire department had to shut off water and heat to the building.
Brillant said due to the damage, the residents of the apartments couldn’t return to the building Tuesday night. How soon they can return depends on how long it takes to repair the heating system in the building, which houses nine or 10 apartments. There wasn’t a lot of structural damage caused by the fire, Brillant said.
The owner of the building, Brunswick Landing Venture, will provide hotel rooms for displaced occupants for the night, according to Brillant. Some of the apartments are occupied by military personnel.
No one was injured due to the fire. Brillant said two residents had coughs from the smoke. They were checked by medical personnel but weren’t taken to a hospital.
Deputy Chief Don Koslosky said all occupants were able to evacuate from the building, though firefighters couldn’t see signs of fire from outside. The fire was contained to two apartments, he said.
The cause of the fire was being investigated by fire investigators with the Brunswick fire and police departments.
Firefighters from neighboring communities including Bath, West Bath, Freeport and Topsham responded.
