The picture of a carved owl perched in the hollow of a tree (β€œA little bit of magic,” April 23, by Amy Calder) immediately caught my attention. OMG, there is a modern-day Boo Radley in our midst.

In the book and subsequent movie β€œTo Kill a Mockingbird,” Boo leaves little gifts to be taken and enjoyed by the neighboring children, Jem and Scout. Now, Jerry Boutin leaves small carved owls for all walkers of the Kennebec-Messalonskee Trail from Winslow to Benton to look at.

It is a selfless gesture, and I think his reward will be that they remain on the perches he has chosen for them.

Thank you, Mr. Boutin, for spreading joy to all who always have room to take it in.
