A fire that broke out Thursday afternoon on Peaks Island destroyed two buildings, a boat and a van, and its cause remained under investigation Thursday evening, the Portland Fire Department said. No one was injured.
The fire department sent the Portland Fire Boat to the island to battle the blaze at 4 Highland Ave., which was reported around 2:30 p.m.
In addition to causing extensive property damage, the fire spread into a wooded area, but crews reported that it was out at 5:30 p.m.
“The fire has been extinguished,” the fire department announced on Twitter, adding that all of the property was “a total loss. There are no injuries reported. Fire investigators working to determine the cause.”
About 20 firefighters responded to the fire, said Capt. John Brennan.
Electricity had to be cut to part of the island because several power lines caught fire. Power had been restored to the island by Thursday evening, according to Central Maine Power Co.
No one was inside the building where the fire started, but flames destroyed the main residence, a second building on the property, one car, and a boat that was being stored on land, Brennan said.
Crews from CMP also responded, Brennan said.
In a photo posted on Twitter by the fire department, a column of black smoke can be seen drifting away from the island.
