Gardiner Federal Credit Union has announced the winners of six $750 scholarships.
Winners from the class of 2021 include Trinity Marshall, Gardiner Area High School; Lindsay Cote, Waterville Senior High School; Jack Begin, Cony High School, Augusta; Bao Chi Dang, Lincoln Academy, Newcastle; and Makayla Bergeron, Richmond High School. The winner from the class of 2019 is Ashley Holmes, Medomak Valley High School, Waldoboro.
The scholarships are open to both graduating seniors and those already in college. A total of 81 applications were received, of those 68 met eligibility requirements, followed instructions, and were therefore considered for the six available scholarships.
To be considered, applicants had to complete the application process and submit two qualifying essays. They did not need to be members, but must have qualified for membership by living, working, worshiping, or attending school in Kennebec or Lincoln county, or in Palermo or Richmond. They also needed to keep their essays between 300 to 600 words. Applicants’ names are masked during the review and decision-making process, and revealed after the selections have been made.
“We’ve not yet decided whether or not we’ll be hosting a scholarship reception at Gardiner FCU over the summer, or if we will mail the checks to our winners,” said Kelly Marie, member of GFCU scholarship committee, in the release from the credit union. “We mailed award certificates to the schools, to be presented to the winners, during their class nights and award celebrations.”
