SKOWHEGAN — With the sun setting, a loud crowd of Skowhegan fans cheering against her, and her right ankle sore after turning it in the second set, Hampden Academy’s Mikiko Frey focused on the little things.

“It was a really tough match for me,” Frey, the Broncos’ No. 1 singles player, said.

Playing against Skowhegan’s Ashley Davis, Frey took the deciding third set, 6-3, ending their marathon match and giving No. 3 Hampden the 3-2 win over No. 2 Skowhegan in the Class A North semifinals. The Broncos advance to the regional finals Tuesday at Lewiston High School.

Skowhegan ends the best season in program history at 12-2.

Davis beat Frey in their only regular-season meeting, in the first match of the season. Frey said she didn’t think of that match as she played Davis again Thursday.

“I was just trying to keep her moving back and forth on the court,” Frey said.

Frey took the first set, 7-6 (7-1) and led the second set 5-4 at break point before Davis rallied for the 7-5 win to force the third set.

Frey, who has a history of ankle injuries, rolled her right ankle midway through the second set, and had it taped before starting the third. Frey said it limited her mobility somewhat.

“I just figured I’d try to push through. I mean, it was pretty big for us,” she said.

After the first set, Skowhegan coach Andy Staples said he told Davis to relax.

“I knew she was petrified because she knew what was at stake. I told her to relax and think about how far we came (this season). Matches are won here and here,” Staples said, pointing to his head and heart, “not with the racket.”

Hampden took an early lead when Chandler Smith and Ella Baldwin took a 6-1, 6-1 second doubles win over Sarah Johnson and Kate Kelso. Skowhegan knotted the match at 1-1 when third singles player Marlee Hisler defeated MacKenzie Patterson, 6-4, 6-0.

The Broncos first doubles team of Ana Schmidt and Sam Quesnel defeated Joey Ramsdell and Mina Calder, 7-5, 6-3, giving them Broncos a 2-1 advantage with the top two singles matches just taking the court.

Skowhegan’s Lily Wright took a 6-3, 6-0 win at second singles over Annika Bragg to tie the match at 2-2, setting up the first singles contest as the deciding match.
