The Whitefield Library and Community Center will hold a used book and yard sale from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sunday, July 4, at the library on Grand Army Hill, 1 Arlington Lane.
Because of the pandemic, the town has had to cancel its iconic 4th of July parade and celebration for the second year. For years, one could purchase all manner of items at the Kings Mills Union Hall White Elephant sale, eat hotdogs cooked by the Kings Mills Fire Department, and bid on all kinds of treasures at the auction. Organizers hope this community event will return next year, but for this 4th, they will attempt to fill a little void.
The library, which began as a summer library in the former Arlington Grange Hall in 2017, has been closed since the summer of 2019 in part because of the pandemic. In 2019, because of the generosity of Kennebec Savings Bank, the library was able to purchase the grange building. With an outpouring of community support, grants and volunteers, extensive renovations began during summer 2020 with the vision of a finished library space and upstairs arts and community center.
When the doors reopen in August, the first floor of the old Arlington Grange Hall will have been transformed into a community library space, complete with more than 5,000 selections, a children’s area and a new cataloguing system.
