SKOWHEGAN — A Skowhegan woman was critically injured in a motor vehicle crash Sunday afternoon, police said.
Skowhegan police Chief David Bucknam said a serious crash was reported about 4:30 p.m. Sunday at the intersection of Pleasant and Elm streets in Skowhegan.
A preliminary investigation at the scene by Sgt. Kris McKenna indicated that Joyce McKenney, 88, of Skowhegan, was driving a 2013 Buick SUV and failed to yield to oncoming traffic at the intersection of Pleasant Street. McKenney’s SUV struck a 2019 GMC pickup truck operated by Patricia Cyr, 77, of Norridgewock, who was traveling east.
“Patricia attempted to swerve to the right around Joyce’s vehicle but was unable to avoid the two-vehicle head-on collision,” Bucknam said. “It appears both failure to yield and speed were factors in the crash.”
Both drivers were taken to Redington-Fairview General Hospital in Skowhegan, with Cyr reportedly having minor injuries and McKenney in critical condition.
