AUGUSTA — An Augusta woman who reportedly bit one police officer and kicked another, and, in a separate incident, cut a woman with an X-Acto knife, pleaded guilty Tuesday to multiple assault charges and was sentenced to serve three months in jail.
Meghan Kerr, 22, was sentenced to 364 days in jail, with all but 90 days suspended.
She was also sentenced to a year of probation after pleading guilty Tuesday to one count of domestic violence assault, two counts of assault and one count each of refusing to submit to arrest, violation of condition of release and criminal mischief.
The charges stemmed from two incidents in Augusta — one Aug. 1, 2020, the other May 11, 2021.
In the 2020 incident, Kerr assaulted a man who lived with her, prompting him to hide from her in their apartment and call police, according to Kennebec County Deputy District Attorney Frayla Tarpinian.
Tarpinian said when Augusta police officers arrived, Kerr tried to close the door on them. A struggle ensued, during which Kerr reportedly bit an officer on the leg and kicked another officer in the leg and chest as they took her into custody.
In the 2021 incident, Kerr reportedly sliced a woman’s stomach with the X-Acto knife and scratched the woman’s apartment door.
Kerr was initially charged with aggravated assault, a class B charge, but that and two other assault charges were dropped as part of a plea agreement, according to prosecutors. The remaining charges against her were class D offenses.
After her release from jail, Kerr must comply with probation conditions that include she not possess illegal drugs or dangerous weapons, be subject to random searches by police, complete psychiatric counseling and have no contact with her victims.
Kerr’s lawyer, David Geller of Waterville, said she had served 90 days in jail while waiting for the court to handle her case, so he expected her to be released Tuesday. She must also pay $525 in fines and fees.
