SOUTH CHINA — Holden McKenney and Andrew Perry each scored goals to lead the Erskine boys soccer team to a 2-0 victory over Gardiner in a season-opening match Friday afternoon.
“We could not have asked for a better result for our first game of the season,” Carrie Larrabee said. “It was a pretty evenly matched game. Our bench was a huge asset to us in the game. It helped us really win those 50-50 balls. The depth in our bench helped us.”
McKenney, a sophomore, opened the scoring a little more than five minutes into the game.
Perry, also a sophomore, capped the scoring off an assist from Sam Boynton with 13:50 remaining in the game.
Timber Parlin had five saves to earn the shutout while Gardiner goalie Sean Doyle recorded two saves.
NYA 1, RICHMOND 0: Chas Rohde’s first-half goal was all the Panthers needed to claim a season-opening victory in Richmond.
NYA keeper Michael Belleau made six saves.
TEMPLE 2, RANGELEY 2: Rangeley and Temple played through the pouring rain and ended up in a tie after double overtime.
Rangeley got some help from eighth-grader Jacob Nickerson, who assisted on Chase Carmichael’s first half goal. Anthony Whittier scored the second half for the Lakers.
It was the season opener for both teams.
FIELD HOCKEY
WINSLOW 2, GARDINER 1: Leah Knight had a goal and an assist and Sage Clukey added a goal to lead the Black Raiders in Winslow.
Alaina Lambert had an assist for Winslow (2-0). Lainey Bell had nine saves.
Bri Smith had a goal for Gardiner (0-2). Cassidy Clark had three saves.
SKOWHEGAN 10, BANGOR 0: Layla Conway scored five goals and had an assist, leading the River Hawks to the victory on Thursday in Bangor.
Laney LeBlanc had three goals and four assists, while Eleanor Tibbetts (three assists) and Elli Quinn (assist) also scored. Kate Kelso had two assists.
Lanie Vanadestine had five saves.
CONY 18, ERSKINE 0: Abigail Merrill scored four goals to lead the Rams to the win in South China.
Madison Veilleux and Brianna Madore added a hat trick apiece for Cony (1-1) while Maci Freeman and Mallory Audette had two goals each. Olivia Dutil, Elise Cunningham and Caroline Hendrickson each scored one goal.
Hannah Torrey made 12 saves for Erskine (0-2).
GIRLS SOCCER
MT. BLUE 4, EDWARD LITTLE 0: Grace Bell scored a goal and assisted on two others as the Cougars (1-0) blanked the the Red Eddies (0-1) in Farmington.
Meren Zeliger scored two goals while Katelyn Daggett also scored. Eryn Parlin had an assist. Kaitlin Burke made three saves in the win.
Hailee Brown stopped eight shots for EL.
MOUNT VIEW 4, LAWRENCE 1: Hannah Coolen scored three goals and Ava Nickerson also scored to lead the Mustangs in Thorndike.
Hazel Abello had an assist for Mount View (1-0-0).
Zoe Ward scored the lone goal for the Bulldogs (0-1-0).
NORTH YARMOUTH ACADEMY 5, RICHMOND 0: Three goals from Angel Huntsman helped give the Panthers (2-0) a big win over the Bobcats (0-1) in Yarmouth.
Huntsman opened the scoring on a header off a corner kick by Maggie Holt before assisting on a goal from Emily Robbins minutes later. Robbins added another goal in the second half, with Anna Belleau and Jazzy Huntsman assisting on Angel Huntsman’s pair of late-game goals.
Richmond goalkeeper Liz Johnson made 18 saves.
