In lieu of its annual community celebration, the Kennebec Valley Community Action Program is set to host a Food & Fun Drive-Thru event from 4 to 6 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 6, simultaneously in Augusta, Waterville and Skowhegan.
The drive thru will be held at the Augusta Civic Center, at 76 Community Drive, Notre Dame Church, in Waterville, and Maine Grains in Skowhegan. Drivers are instructed to enter the Notre Dame parking lot from Kimball Street in Waterville and the Maine Grains parking lot from Court Street in Skowhegan.
The goal of the past celebrations has been to provide a free, fun, and enriching experience for families and children, while also sharing information about the wide range of services offered by KVCAP.
“We are pleased to be able to pivot to a drive-thru event this year, while still maintaining the original intent of our annual celebration,” said KVCAP Chief Executive Officer Suzanne Walsh, according to a news release from the nonprofit organization. “The health and wellbeing of families and communities is so important to us and at the heart of our mission. This event will help with food insecurity and the need for family togetherness as COVID-19 continues to impact our communities. This drive-thru event will ensure a safe experience for everyone.”
Each drive-thru location will contain three stations. The first will provide free children’s books, donated by the Waterville Noontime Rotary Club. The second station will offer enrichment bags, filled with low-cost activities and ideas that children can explore with their families. The last will provide food gift cards along with a reusable shopping bag filled with recipes and information about area resources.
There are limited numbers of each item. They will be distributed on a first-come, first-served basis until they are gone.
The Maine Community Foundation provided the funding for this project, as part of its effort to address the challenges that people are experiencing during the pandemic.
