Carver Street off Kennedy Memorial Drive in Waterville intersects with John Avenue, and too many vehicles driven by uncaring drivers use that route as a shortcut to West River. The problem is it only becomes a shortcut when you speed around 40 or 50 mph in a 25-mph zone.

This is an elderly community with no sidewalks. Yes, a portable speed sign indicator was set up once on Carver and once on John for about a week apiece this summer and I saw one time a police cruiser doing radar checks. Neither very effective. I envision that it will take someone’s death from being struck by a speeding vehicle before anything changes.

Please understand it is unsettling when you are walking your dog and a vehicle is approaching you at 40 mph and the person driving has the attitude of privilege and could care less about anybody else. So don’t be upset when someone yells and gives you the finger.
