What’s your take on food sovereignty, or the topic of Question 3 on the Nov. 2 ballot?
There’s been a lot of talk about Question 1 in the upcoming Nov. 2 elections, but it’s not the only key issue on the ballot. Question 3, the Right to Produce, Harvest and Consume Food Amendment, asks voters if they’d agree to make it a fundamental right for individuals to grow and consume their own food in Maine. The issue is also known as food sovereignty.
Proponents say that the proposal is unassailable: food is life. Critics say that the amendment could have unintended consequences for food safety or animal welfare down the line, depending on how judges interpret the amendment in future court cases.
