South Berwick’s police chief confirmed Sunday evening that a Portsmouth, New Hampshire police officer who lives in the town is facing domestic violence charges.
Police Chief Dana Lajoie did not provide details about the incident that led to the arrest of Portsmouth officer Todd Goodwin. The incident took place at Goodwin’s home and he was taken into custody Thursday night. Lajoie said more information will be released Monday morning.
Goodwin was placed on paid administrative leave Friday following his arrest, according to Portsmouth Police Chief Mark Newport.
“They’re serious allegations,” Newport told the Associated Press. “It’s an unfortunate situation, not only to the victim but also to our department. It’s a representation of our police officers and our department, and we are waiting for the pending investigation to find out further details.”
It could not be determined if Goodwin has a lawyer.
The Portsmouth Herald also spoke with Newport, who told the newspaper that Goodwin has been with the police department for nearly 13 years.
“We have not gotten the report yet so I do not have the details of his arrest,” Newport told the paper. “South Berwick is doing the investigation and we will wait to hear from them.”
