WATERVILLE — For almost 30 minutes, the Thomas College men’s basketball team looked like it might pull off an upset over Colby College.
But then a switched flipped, and it was Colby that walked out of the Larry Mahaney Gymnasium with an 82-63 win Tuesday night.
“For us, it’s still a young group,” said Colby head coach Damien Strahorn of his team, which returns one senior. “The process to get good is something that takes time. We have to sort of move and grow through those experiences.”
Down 39-35 at halftime, the Mules (2-1) outscored the Terriers 47-24 in the second half, eventually tying the game 60-60 on an Alec McGovern 3-pointer with eight minutes left to play. McGovern finished the game with 16 points.
McGovern had help offensively from Noah Tyson, who had 14 points and 15 rebounds, Jack Lawson (13 points) and David Basich (11 points).
Thomas (1-2) started the game with a 9-0 run in the first nine minutes. The Terriers were scrappy throughout, showing no fear to its cross-town opponent.
“I told them, ‘We’re fine,’” Thomas head coach Deshon Gaither said. “It’s different being 0-3 (in previous years) to 1-2. We haven’t had a home game in two years.”
“Thomas played great in that first half,” Strahorn said. “The energy they played with, the aggressiveness. Just competing and battling and they controlled that half in a fantastic way. We were able to stick through it and persevere in the second half.
Hopefully we can work on it and get better.”
Sawyer Deprey led the Terriers with 13 points, Darby Shea had 10 points and Demetris Webster had nine points.
