CANAAN — With the help of a $15,000 grant, a new playground is in the works at Lake George Regional Park in Canaan.
Darryll White, director of Lake George Regional Park, said the grant, awarded by the Conservation for All 2021 Fund of the Maine Community Foundation, is to be used to “repair and improve water drainage for a nature-friendly, nautical-themed playground.”
“The playground, designed to encourage both imagination and health activity for preschool-age children, is expected to be completed by the Fall of 2022, depending on future funding,” White wrote in a statement released to the news media. “We are targeting the end of 2022 for completion, but this timing is contingent upon future funding success.”
The new playground is planned for east of 10 Main St., along Route 2, on part of 350 acres that include forestland, a beach and picnic grounds.
The playground is expected to span about 9,000 square feet, according to White.
“The playground location was selected because of its proximity to a high-use area and the existing Octagon Building, which will be repurposed as a playground feature,” White said. “The French drain will be installed with stone and pip through several ditches to alleviate standing water in the spring and early summer.”
Playground features include a donated, hand-built 24-foot sailboat. Along with the Octagon Building, the set will operate as a playhouse and imaginary lighthouse.
Lake George Regional Park was launched nearly 30 years ago and provides lake access to Canaan, Cornville and Skowhegan. It reportedly draws about 35,000 visitors annually.
