SKOWHEGAN — Mechanical issues led to a two-vehicle crash that sent one driver to a hospital with leg and chest pain, police said Friday.
Skowhegan police were alerted about the crash shortly before 5 p.m. Thursday, police Chief David Bucknam said. Zenon Herrera, 39, of Skowhegan, was driving west on U.S. Route 201 heading toward Skowhegan. He was experiencing a mechanical problem with his 2007 Honda Odyssey and was attempting to drive to a mechanic in town for assistance.
Because of the mechanical problem, Herrera was driving with his headlights off, Bucknam said. At the same time, Donna Boynton, 74, of Skowhegan, was pulling out of her driveway onto Route 201 and did not see the minivan approaching due to the headlights being turned off.
Herrera attempted to swerve to avoid Boynton’s 2009 Nissan Rogue but was unable to avoid the collision. The passenger side of Herrera’s minivan collided with the front driver’s side of Boynton’s SUV. The damage to the SUV was significant and the Skowhegan Fire Department had to extricate Boynton from her vehicle.
Boynton was taken to Redington-Fairview General Hospital with leg and chest pain. Bucknam said that he did not know Boynton’s condition Friday.
The investigation into the crash is ongoing.
