Salt Bay Chamberfest Artistic Director and cellist Wilhelmina Smith embarked on a project with cinematographer Joseph Zizzo to create four music videos, pairing solo cello music with Midcoast Maine vistas.

Camden Public Library plans to host an online screening of the videos at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 8, accompanied by a real-time discussion with Smith and Zizzo.

“The sublimity of the Maine Coast is a unique stage for contemplating nature, life and art,” said Smith. “Music that expresses the emotions felt when immersed in such a landscape is at the core of this project. The featured pieces interact with and respond to the environment, making music and nature equal partners.”

The videos feature Smith in Round Pond Harbor performing Johann Sebastian Bach’s “Prelude from the Cello Suite No. 6” in D Major, according to a program news release.

Amid the white pines of Seal Cove Shore Preserve, she performs Esa-Pekka Salonen’s “Breathe.” Against the dramatic backdrop of crashing waves and metamorphic rock formations on Pemaquid Point, “Per Nørgård’s Solo Intimo” is played. On the banks of the Damariscotta River, Smith’s rendition of Dawn Avery’s “Gratitude” expresses thanks for people’s lives, the land, and the music that fills their souls.

The mission of Salt Bay Chamberfest is to enrich the cultural life of Midcoast Maine by producing musical concerts of the highest artistic level. Salt Bay Chamberfest advances the vitality of chamber music by featuring standard chamber music literature, as well as new and existing works of living composers, performed by today’s musicians.
