Two area men have been indicted on felony assault charges in separate incidents in Waterville, with allegations that one sexually assaulted a child younger than 12-years-old multiple times while the other assaulted a woman and her 4-year-old daughter.
The indictments were among those handed up last week by a Kennebec County grand jury.
Kevin C. Simpson, 35, of Waterville, was indicted by a grand jury recently on three counts of aggravated assault and one count each of domestic violence assault and domestic violence assault on a child younger than 6 years old.
In incidents that took place between Oct. 1, 2021, and Dec. 2, 2021, Simpson allegedly assaulted a woman he lived with in Waterville multiple times, in some instances causing injuries.
The woman also alleged Simpson assaulted her 4-year-old daughter, after becoming upset with her because she would not eat her dinner. He allegedly held the girl down with his foot on her back and struck her at least seven times with a belt, then lifted her up, off the ground, with his hands around her neck, according to an affidavit filed by Luis Rodriguez, a Waterville Police officer. Rodriguez, in his affidavit, said police could see marks on the girl’s back and neck.
The woman told police that she used to live with Simpson in New Jersey but she moved to Maine with her daughter to get away from him because he was abusive mentally and physically.
The aggravated assault charges are Class A crimes, punishable by up to 30 years in prison.
In an unrelated case, Christopher D. Curry, 39, of Vassalboro, was indicted on three counts of gross sexual assault, three counts of unlawful sexual contact, two counts of visual sexual aggression against a child, and two counts of sexual misconduct with a child, all involving the same child, who was younger than 12 years old at the time of the alleged incidents.
The gross sexual assault charges, which are Class A felony offenses, allege Curry engaged in a sexual act with a child who was younger than 12 years old. The visual sexual aggression against a child charges allege that Curry exposed his genitals to the child, or caused the child to expose her genitals to him, for the purpose of arousing or gratifying sexual desire.
The incidents allegedly took place between Sept. 1, 2017, and Feb. 15, 2018, in Waterville.
An indictment is not a determination of guilty but indicates there is enough evidence to proceed with formal charges and a trial.
