Two women were taken to an Augusta hospital Friday night after they suffered injuries when the snowmobile they were riding crashed into a pole under a camp in Rome.
Amy Madden, 48, of Rome was driving a 2016 Ski-Doo Expedition with her friend Monica McCarthy, 56, of Belgrade, at about 6:15 p.m. Friday off Long Pond and were going up a steep embankment when the crash occurred, according to Mark Latti, spokesman for the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries & Wildlife.
Latti said Saturday in an email that Madden failed to maneuver the snowmobile up the hill and around a camp, and the snowmobile crashed into a support post under the camp, rolling the snowmobile on its side.
“Both Madden and McCarthy were transported to Maine General Hospital,” Latti said, referring to Alfond Center for Health in Augusta. “Madden suffered injuries to her ribs and chest and McCarthy had injuries to her chest and arm. Both stayed overnight at Maine General and McCarthy was discharged this morning.”
Latti said both women were wearing helmets at the time of the crash.
“The Maine Warden Service was assisted at the scene by the Rome Fire Department, Belgrade Fire Department and Delta Ambulance,” Latti said. “More information will be released if it becomes available.”
