SOLON — Nine tenants of a three-unit apartment house at 90 North Main St. were displaced Wednesday night after a fire broke out in a kitchen and spread to another apartment kitchen on the other side of a wall, damaging both.
Fire Chief Duayne Rollins said Thursday that Office of State Fire Marshal investigators were scheduled to arrive to try to determine the cause of the fire. He said it was difficult to identify where the fire started.
About 25 firefighters from Solon, Bingham and Anson fought the fire in the two-story building, which was reported about 8 p.m. Wednesday.
“We kept it confined to the two kitchens and got it knocked down,” Rollins said.
The building has two, two-story apartments, where the fire occurred, as well as one apartment in the back of the building, he said. Firefighters had to tear down a ceiling in one of the kitchens to get to the fire, and the other apartment kitchen was heavily damaged, he said.
Some of the tenants went to stay with family or friends and two went to a hotel Wednesday night, according to Rollins.
He said an Anson firefighter went into the building and retrieved a cat and brought it outside to its owner; another cat was unaccounted for but could have been hiding in the building, according to Rollins.
The Somerset County Sheriff’s Office was at the scene to help direct traffic, as one lane of U.S. Route 201 had to be closed, he said. Redington-Fairview General Hospital Emergency Medical Service also stood by but no one was injured, according to the chief.
The fire occurred about a mile north of the Solon Hotel on Main Street, he said.
Firefighters remained at the scene for about three hours, Rollins said.
