I would feel fine about converting the empty Kmart building to a temperature-controlled indoor storage space (“Augusta considers new use for former Kmart building as demand for self-storage rises,” May 27). I would not feel fine about seeing the parking lot filled with ugly fencing around rows of ugly metal boxes on Western Avenue. That might work at the north side of the Sears building west of I-95, but not in downtown Augusta.
Find some other use for the Kmart building that could make use of the parking spaces like a flea market or offices or a school or shelter housing or new business incubator or clean manufacturing. Perhaps a branch of UMA or an activity space or solar panels on the roof and power storage space with emergency generators below. Even indoor farming or car lot with more skylights. Anything that would not offend the eye.
