A Waterville man who police said fired more than a dozen gunshots during a domestic dispute was indicted by a grand jury on attempted murder and other charges.
Maurice Watkins-Cundiff, 29, of Waterville, was indicted on a Class A charge of attempted murder, as well as domestic violence criminal threatening with a dangerous weapon, reckless conduct with a firearm, aggravated criminal mischief, domestic violence assault and criminal operating under the influence. The charges all stem from an April 10 incident in which he allegedly fired at least a dozen gunshots at a car with two people in it as it was driving away.
State prosecutors said Watkins-Cundiff had argued with an “intimate partner,” punched her in the face and pointed a gun at her. He then fired rounds at her as she and another person attempted to leave the Pleasant Street, Waterville, scene in a car. Police said they found 13 bullet casings and a trail of fluids that had apparently come from the car. They said several rounds of bullets hit the car as it fled.
Watkins-Cundiff left the scene and traveled to Head of Falls, where he was arrested by police. Police also said they located the gun he allegedly used in the dispute.
Police were called to Pleasant Street in Waterville just after 1:30 a.m. on April 10 after receiving reports of shots fired in the residential neighborhood.
The indictment against him alleges Watkins-Cundiff “did intentionally or knowingly attempt to cause the death of another human being by firing a loaded gun at the car.”
Watkins-Cundiff was also indicted on three counts of violating conditions of release, for allegedly contacting the victim in the case on three separate occasions, against the conditions of his release on bail.
An indictment is not a finding of guilt but does indicate enough evidence exists to proceed with formal charges and a trial.
A Kennebec County grand jury indicted Watkins-Cundiff on June 23.
