NEWPORT — A 35-year-old man was shot and killed by a Penobscot County sheriff’s deputy Friday during a confrontation at a campground on Sebasticook Lake, authorities said.
The incident occurred shortly after 4 p.m. at Sebasticook Lake Campground, which is at the southern tip of the lake near Route 2.
Deputy Kenneth York was the first to respond to a report of a person with a weapon at the campground and was confronted by Stephen Bossom, who was holding a gun, according to a statement posted to the Facebook page for the Penobscot County Sheriff’s Office.
York fired on Bossom, killing him. The statement didn’t say what Bossom specifically did to prompt York to fire, such as whether he raised his weapon toward York. It also didn’t provide a hometown for Bossom or explain whether he was staying at the campground.
The incident led to a heavy police response to the campground, with authorities closing roads leading to it. Newport police also responded to the scene along with Dexter police and Maine State Police.
Sheriff’s officials, following department policy, placed York on administrative leave as the investigation into the shooting continues. The Office of the Maine Attorney General is investigating.
No further information was released.
York joined the sheriff’s office in 2017 after graduating from the Maine Criminal Justice Academy in Vassalboro, according to a report by the Lewiston Sun Journal.
