AUGUSTA — A man who allegedly stabbed a Farmingdale man in the stomach and then had to be revived by police administering Narcan when they arrested him has been indicted by a grand jury.
Hector Rivera, 26, was indicted Thursday by a Kennebec County grand jury on a Class A count of elevated aggravated assault, a felony-level offense punishable by up to 30 years in prison, and on charges of aggravated assault, unlawful possession of scheduled drugs (cocaine base), violation of condition of release, refusing to submit to arrest and falsifying physical evidence.
Rivera was described by arresting officers as a Gardiner resident, but is listed as a New York City resident on the indictment against him. He allegedly stabbed a 31-year-old Farmingdale man multiple times June 7 in Farmingdale, near Maine Avenue and the Kennebec River Rail Trail.
The stabbing victim told police he was arguing with Rivera in the bedroom of a 553 Maine Ave. apartment when Rivera stabbed him in the stomach. Police said the victim was taken to MaineGeneral Medical Center Augusta for treatment of bleeding from a deep wound to his stomach.
The Kennebec County Sheriff’s Office and Maine State Police responded the stabbing report, and Rivera fled the scene on foot before officers arrived, according to an affidavit filed by Kennebec County Detective John Bourque.
Less than an hour later, officers using a police dog apprehended Rivera after what they described as a brief struggle involving the dog.
While Rivera was being secured and awaiting an ambulance crew to respond for a dog bite, apparently from the police dog, he began to exhibit signs and symptoms of a drug overdose. Police suspected he had ingested unknown drugs while he was fleeing them earlier, according to Bourque.
Deputies and state troopers administered seven doses of Narcan, a drug that counteracts the effects of an opioid overdose, and performed chest compressions until rescue workers arrived and took Rivera to MaineGeneral Medical Center in Augusta.
Rivera was treated at the hospital and discharged June 9, according to a MaineGeneral spokesperson. He was then arrested and is being held at Kennebec County Correctional Facility in Augusta on $50,000 bail.
Bourque said processed the items June 9 that police had collected from the hospital and found a red folding knife in the rear pocket of Rivera’s pants. Bourque said he could see the knife had red-brown stains on it, which he said were consistent with blood.
Deputies also found a clear plastic bag in Rivera’s clothing that police said contained 4.7 grams of crack cocaine.
An indictment is not a determination of guilt, but indicates there is enough evidence to proceed with formal charges and a trial.
