NEW YORK — Luis Castillo pitched five-hit ball into the seventh inning in his Seattle debut, and the Mariners used a fast start to beat Gerrit Cole and the New York Yankees 7-3 on Wednesday.
Eugenio Suarez, Carlos Santana and Jarred Kelenic homered against Cole (9-4) during Seattle’s six-run first. Jesse Winker connected against Wandy Peralta in the seventh, helping the Mariners match their season high for homers.
Castillo (5-4) struck out eight in 6 2/3 innings in his second start in the Bronx in less than a month. The right-hander was charged with three runs, five hits and three walks.
The 29-year-old Castillo pitched seven sparkling innings for Cincinnati at New York on July 14. The Reds traded the ace to the Mariners on Friday night for four prospects.
Castillo got some help from shortstop J.P. Crawford, who made a pair of impressive defensive plays.
Crawford cut down Isiah Kiner-Falefa with a strong relay throw when he tried to score from first on a double by Kyle Higashioka. Crawford also speared a 106.5 mph liner by Aaron Hicks to open the fifth while shifted to the right of second base.
Castillo retired 10 straight before issuing consecutive walks to DJ LeMahieu and Josh Donaldson in the sixth. But he got out of the jam by striking out Josh Donaldson on a slider and retiring Andrew Benintendi on a liner to second.
Castillo cruised into the seventh at 95 pitches and easily got the first two outs. He allowed a single to Kiner-Falefa and exited after Higashioka hit a two-run homer.
RAYS 3, BLUE JAYS 2: Hits by newly acquired Jose Siri and David Peralta produced the winning run for host Tampa Bay.
Siri led off the Tampa Bay sixth with a single off Adam Cimber (8-4). He stole second and scored on Peralta’s tie-breaking single.
Peralta had two of Tampa Bay’s six hits, all singles, after they managed just two hits in Tuesday night’s 3-1 loss.
Peralta was acquired in a trade with Arizona on Saturday, and Siri came over from Houston in a three-way trade on Monday.
TWINS 4, TIGERS 1:Trade acquisition Jorge Lopez earned his first save with his new team, newcomer Sandy Leon drove in two runs and Minnesota at home.
Carlos Correa and Gio Urshela added RBI for the Twins.
Entering to a nice ovation, Lopez, an All-Star acquired Tuesday from Baltimore, earned his 20th save of the season with a 1-2-3 ninth inning.
ORIOLES 6, RANGERS 3: Pinch-hitter Terrin Vavra hit a tie-breaking RBI double right after a disputed stolen base in the eighth inning, and visiting Baltimore completed its first season series sweep against Texas.
The Rangers challenged when Jorge Mateo was ruled safe on a stolen base with two outs, and the call stood after a replay review of the bang-bang play. Vavra then lined a double into left-center for a 3-2 lead, and Robinson Chirinos, who homered in the seventh, singled him home with his third hit.
Ryan McKenna also went deep for the Orioles (54-51), who swept all three games in Texas like they did at home a month ago. Baltimore already has two wins more than all of last season, and is only 1 1/2 games behind in the race for the American League’s last wild-card spot.
WHITE SOX 4, ROYALS 1: Lance Lynn threw four-hit ball over six innings, Jose Abreu homered for the second consecutive game and Eloy Jimenez hit three singles as Chicago beat visiting Kansas City.
Lynn (2-4) struck out eight for the third time this season and not walking a batter for the third time in his last four starts. Rookie Bobby Witt Jr. snapped Lynn’s shutout bid by hitting a home run with one out in the sixth.
NATIONAL LEAGUE
PHILLIES 3, BRAVES 1: Nick Castellanos hit a tie-breaking two-run homer in the eighth inning as visiting Philadelphia took full advantage of an overturned call to beat Atlanta.
After getting blown out 13-1 in the opener of the two-game series between NL East rivals, the Phillies looked to be down to their final three outs when J.T. Realmuto grounded into what was ruled an inning-ending double play with the Braves nursing a 1-0 lead.
But Philadelphia challenged the call, and the replay showed Realmuto’s foot getting to the bag ahead of the relay throw while Rhys Hoskins trotted home from third.
With the game now tied at 1, Collin McHugh (2-2) fell behind 2-0 in the count before grooving one to Castellanos, who launched a 420-foot drive over the center-field wall for his ninth homer of the season.
METS 9, NATIONALS 5: Daniel Vogelbach hit a grand slam and Pete Alonso connected for his 28th homer, helping New York win at Washington.
New York won for the eighth time in nine games and opened a 3 1/2-game lead over second-place Atlanta in the NL East. The teams begin a four-day, five-game series Thursday in New York.
Chris Bassitt (8-7) pitched seven shutout innings for New York, which finished with 14 hits.
MARLINS 3, REDS 0: Sandy Alcantara threw his major league-leading third complete game and Miami beat visiting Cincinnati.
The All-Star right-hander allowed six hits, walked one and struck out three on 105 pitches for his third career shutout. Alcantara (10-4) is the first Marlins pitcher to reach double-digit victories in a season since Caleb Smith won 10 in 2019.
Alcantara snapped a tie with Houston’s Framber Valdez for the league lead in complete games.
Luke Williams had three hits and stole three bases while Jesus Aguilar homered for the Marlins, who snapped a nine-game home losing skid.
INTERLEAGUE
GUARDIANS 7, DIAMONDBACKS 4: Amed Rosario hit a mammoth three-run homer and rookie Oscar Gonzalez added a solo shot, sending Cleveland to a win at home.
Rosario’s 450-foot drive to dead center was the longest of the season at Progressive Field, topping the 447-footer by Boston’s Alex Verdugo on June 25. His sixth homer of the year lifted Cleveland to a 4-0 lead in the fifth.

Lamet pitched in 13 games for the Padres this season, going 0-1 with a 9.49 ERA.
