Bernard Fishman, director of the Maine State Museum in Augusta, plans to present “Historic Maine in 3-D” as the Kennebec Historical Society’s August lecture.

The talk is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 17, at South Parish Congregational Church, 9 Church St. in Augusta.

The subject is a modern way of looking at a form of early 19th-century commercial photography, which used binocular images on cards or glass, today called stereoviews, to allow images to be seen in three dimensions when looked at through a viewer.

Fishman has amassed nearly 30,000 stereoviews. He has drawn from his own collection, as well as from the 20,000 stereoviews of Maine held by the Maine Historic Preservation Commission, to assemble this projection show of Victorian scenes of Maine, largely from the 1860s and ’70s, just after the Civil War.

The presentation is free to the public (with donations accepted).

For more information, call KHS Executive Director Scott Wood at 207-622-7718.
