ROME — The Travis Mills Foundation plans to hold an open house for its new Health and Wellness Center from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 30, at the 1002 Watson Pond Road retreat in Rome.

It took exactly one year from groundbreaking to ribbon cutting on the $7 million facility, which includes an indoor pool, large and small fitness areas, and a massage room.

The center is filled with mainstream fitness equipment so that the recalibrated veterans served by the foundation can learn to adapt to them depending on their injury, and then return home to attend their local fitness centers or develop a home gym, according to a news release from Molly Lovell-Keely, communications and marketing manager.

The event will also include foundation merchandise, make-and-take crafts for children, trick or treating, face painting, tattoos, doughnut-eating contest, hot dogs and cider; costumes are encouraged.

Also at the event, the foundation is selling a limited number of $25 raffle tickets for a handcrafted solo canoe built exclusively for Travis Mills Foundation by Russ Sabia, a summer resident on Long Pond. Tickets can be purchased when signing up for open house tickets.

The canoe has a 12-foot length and 28-inch beam, and was designed by Thomas Hill, with Okoume (mahogany) lapstrake planking and western red cedar rails and breasthook. It is ultra-light and weighs approximately 27 pounds. It is easily carried and car-topped and took 120 hours of build time.
