FAIRFIELD — The Town Council is expected to appoint a new member this month after a councilor resigned recently for personal reasons.

Councilor Mark Cooper resigned at the end of October, Town Manager Michelle Flewelling said. His term was scheduled to expire in December 2023.

The Fairfield town charter stipulates the Town Council appoint a successor within 30 days to serve until the next municipal election, which is set for next November, when the seat would have been up for election.

Residents who are interested in serving on the Town Council should send a letter of intent and résumé by Wednesday to info@fairfieldme.com.

A message left Monday for Cooper inquiring about his departure was not immediately returned.

The council is expected to take up the matter at its next meeting, scheduled for Nov. 16. After being appointed, the new councilor would begin serving immediately.

A few residents have expressed interest in the appointment, Flewelling said, but as of Monday morning, no one had officially submitted an application.

The vacancy comes as the Town Council already has two seats up for election this week in a contested race with three candidates: incumbent Stephanie Thibodeau; Peter Lawrence, a former councilor; and newcomer Lawrence MacDonald. The top two vote-getters will join the council.

Tuesday’s election creates the possibility of a shift on the council, with at least two residents joining the panel.
