ROME — In February, Maine deaf and hard of hearing youth can attend a long weekend at Pine Tree Camp.
This program, the Dirigo Experience, is scheduled for Friday through Monday, Feb. 17-20 at 14 Pine Tree Camp Road. Through outdoor experiences and team building with peers, participants will have the chance to make new friends and develop a greater sense of self-esteem and self-confidence through trying new activities like adventure snowshoeing, archery and ice fishing, according to a news release from Erin Rice, chief development officer.
“This program fills a real need,” said Joshua Seal, director of Pine Tree Society’s Interpreting Services. “We want to invest in the future by stepping up to help Deaf youth develop a sense of connection and community now.”
Pine Tree Camp’s director Dawn Willard-Robinson agreed.
“Most Deaf youth have never had the chance to meet another Deaf person their own age,” she said. “The Dirigo Experience breaks that cycle by bringing Deaf and hard of hearing young people together for a life-changing experience.”
Pine Tree Camp’s Dirigo Experience is designed for ages 11 to 15 and limited to 30 participants. Registration is required; full scholarships are available.
