WATERVILLE — The Ticonic Bridge will be closed to traffic one night next week for construction work that requires access to the entire bridge, according to the Maine Department of Transportation.
Vehicles will not have access to the bridge from 7 p.m. on April 20 to 6 a.m. on April 21.
The MDOT has launched a four-year project to replace the bridge, which spans the Kennebec River between Waterville and Winslow. It is estimated to cost nearly $53 million.
During the bridge closure next week, pedestrians will be allowed to use the bridge, but vehicles will be required to follow posted detour routes, according to an MDOT notice. Message boards will be posted to warn drivers.
If it rains April 20, the closure will begin at 7 p.m. on April 26. If it rains that day, the bridge will close at 7 p.m. on April 27.
Drivers are encouraged to drive cautiously, observe signs in the work zone and obey reduced work zone speed limits, according to the MDOT.
