OXFORD — Maine Woodlot Owners’ Western Maine chapter will give a Woodland Management for Wildlife tour of a Western Foothills Land Trust property from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, July 8. The property is located off the Allen Hill road that was formerly owned and managed by P.H. Chadbourne and was intensely managed for white pine for many years.
The tour will be on easy paths, and coffee and doughnuts will be served until the walk starts at 9:30 a.m.
Chuck Hulsey, Wildlife Resource supervisor with the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife and a Maine licensed forester, and Hannah Mullally, Partners for Fish and Wildlife Biologist with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife, will speak during the program. Hulsey has managed woodland and upland habitats for wildlife on both state and private lands, and Mullally provides fish and wildlife habitat management outreach to landowners statewide, according to a news release from Pamela Dorman with Maine Woodlot Owners.
The program will focus on forestry that benefits wildlife and promotes high value timber; thinning forest stands while creating habitat for wildlife needing dead trees, cavities, and downed woody material; identifying pollinator management opportunities in the forest; and using smartphone apps to learn about plants and birds occupying this habitat.
