The Jefferson Historical Society plans this month to host Justin Jackson, PhD., assistant professor of history at Bard College at Simon’s Rock in Great Barrington, Massachusetts.
Jackson, formerly of Jefferson, will give an illustrated talk at 7 p.m. Saturday, July 15, at the Jefferson Fire Rescue Building, 204 Waldoboro Road. The talk is open to the public.
His topic will be “Jefferson at Gettysburg, 160 Years Ago: How One Maine Town Helped Save the Union and Gave it a New Birth of Freedom.”
James Abram Hall, captain and the commander of the 2nd Maine Artillery battery at Gettysburg, was one of three Hall brothers born in Jefferson, who served in the Civil War. He reached the rank of Brigadier General by the end of the war and was the only brother to survive. The Jefferson GAR post was named after the youngest Hall brother, William C. Hall, according to a news release from Marilyn Speckmann, president of the historical society.
