Nathan Hickey hit a two-run homer in the fourth inning, and four Portland pitchers combined on a six-hitter as the Sea Dogs extended their winning streak to four games with a 2-1 Eastern League victory Sunday against the Binghamton Rumble Ponies at Hadlock Field.
Isaac Coffey (3-0) struck out nine in 5 1/3 innings, allowing one run on three hits and three walks. Jacob Webb, Brendan Cellucci and Robert Kwiatkowski closed out the win, with Kwiatkowski earning his first Double-A save as the Sea Dogs improved to 10-2 in the second-half standings.
BASKETBALL
PEACH JAM: Cayden Boozer, the son of former NBA player Carlos Boozer, scored 23 points to lead Nightrydas Elite to a 58-50 win over Maine United in the U16 championship game in North Augusta, South Carolina.
Cooper Flagg led Maine with 18 points, 12 rebounds and seven assists. His twin brother, Ace, and former Bangor High player Landon Clark each scored 12 points.
WNBA: DeWanna Bonner took over in the fourth quarter, scoring 13 of her 29 points, and the Connecticut Sun pulled away from the visiting Washington Mystics, 92-84.
Thomas finished with 22 points, nine rebounds and six assists, and the Sun (14-5) made a season-high 13 3-pointers, including six by Bonner, tying her career high.
• Arike Ogunbowale scored 10 consecutive points down the stretch and finished with 28 to help the Dallas Wings win at Indiana for the Fever’s seventh-straight loss.
• Brittney Griner scored 29 points, and the Phoenix Mercury held on for a 78-72 win at home against the Los Angeles Sparks.
Diana Taurasi added 12 of her 22 in the fourth quarter to put her less than 100 points from 10,000 in her career.
• Kelsey Plum scored a career-high 40 points on 14-of-18 shooting and the Las Vegas Aces routed the Minnesota Lynx for the third time this season, rolling 113-89 in Minneapolis.
NBA: Justin Champagnie led the Boston Celtics with 21 points and 12 rebounds in a 103-98 Summer League loss to the Washington Wizards in Las Vegas.
Second-round draft pick Jordan Walsh was one of six players who scored in double figures for Boston, finishing with 12 points.
SOCCER
GOLD CUP: Matt Turner stopped two penalty kicks, and the United States beat Canada 3-2 in a shootout after a 2-2 draw in Cincinnati for a berth in the CONCACAF Gold Cup semifinals against Panama.
In a game that was scoreless until the 88th minute, the U.S. tied the score when Canada’s Scott Kennedy had an own goal in the 115th minute, six minutes after Jacob Shaffelburg put Canada ahead. Brandon Vázquez gave the U.S. a 1-0 lead late in the second half, but Steven Vitória made it 1-1 in the third minute of stoppage time with a penalty kick after a hand ball on Miles Robinson.
Turner stopped Vitória’s opening penalty kick with his right hand. After Vázquez skied his attempt over the crossbar, Turner dived left to bat away Liam Fraser’s attempt.
Cade Cowell, Gianluca Busio and Jesús Ferreira all converted for the U.S., while Kamal Miller and Jacen Russell-Rowe made shots for Canada. Charles-Andreas Brym put Canada’s final attempt off the crossbar.
U.S. WOMEN: Rising star Trinity Rodman scored in the 76th minute and again in the 88th, and the Americans finally capitalized on their many offensive chances to beat Wales 2-0 in San Jose, California, in a final tuneup for the Women’s World Cup.
GERMANY: United States midfielder Brenden Aaronson will play in Germany’s top flight next season, joining Union Berlin on loan from Leeds of the English Premier League.
Aaronson, 22, made 36 Premier League appearances last season for Leeds, which was relegated to the English Championship.
CYCLING
TOUR DE FRANCE: Canadian Michael Woods delivered an impressive solo effort to claim the biggest success of his career at the top of a legendary climb, while two-time champion Tadej Pogacar further reduced the gap with overall leader and defending champion Jonas Vingegaard.
Woods, part of an early breakaway, caught and passed American Matteo Jorgenson just 500 meters from the summit of the Puy de Dome after his 24-year-old rival jumped away from the leading group with less than 50 kilometers left.
Riding well behind the breakaway, Pogacar launched an attack with 1.5 kilometers left and gained eight seconds on Vingegaard, who now leads by 17 seconds going into Monday’s first rest day.
HOCKEY
NHL: The Detroit Red Wings acquired Michigan native Alex DeBrincat from the Ottawa Senators in exchange for two players and draft picks.
The Red Wings signed the 25-year-old DeBrincat, a two-time 41 goal scorer, to a four-year extension worth about $7.8 million annually.
Ottawa got forward Dominik Kubalik, defensive prospect Donovan Sebrango, a conditional 2024 first-round draft pick and Detroit’s 2024 fourth-round selection.
