In times like these, where our nation seems to be divided by varying political views, there emerges a compelling need for unity, understanding, and active participation in our democratic processes. I believe that fostering political awareness and involvement among our youth can be a beacon of change, bridging divides and cultivating a harmonious future.

As your state senator for District 15, representing the vibrant communities of Augusta, Belgrade, China, Mount Vernon, Sidney, and Vassalboro, I find immense joy and fulfillment in welcoming students to the State House when the Senate is in session.

Our Honorary Page program is a golden opportunity for students, from third grade through high school, to immerse themselves in the Senate Chamber process and engage directly with legislators, offering a front-row seat to democracy in action!

For those yearning for a deeper dive, students are invited to shadow me, experiencing the legislative process up close, participating as much or as little as they desire. I have been privileged to witness students who have not only proposed legislation but have passionately testified on it, tracing its journey until it blossomed into law. My ultimate aspiration is to cultivate an environment where students feel at home with their government, understanding their pivotal role in shaping it.

The Senate convenes in January, and I am eager to host more students at the State House. Parents, teachers, or anyone interested in orchestrating such enlightening visits are encouraged to reach out at 287-1505 or matt.pouliot@legislature.maine.gov.

I look forward to hearing from you, and to having the opportunity to witness the spark of curiosity ignite within our youth. Let’s embark on this journey of learning, growing, and shaping our democracy together!

Sen. Matt Pouliot
