Maine Woodland Owners plans to host an online program geared for property owners in Maine who are new to managing their woodlands, often called “next generation woodland owners.”
Maine Forest Service District Forester Lauren Ouellette will present “You Have Woods … Now What?” at 4 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 18, as part of Maine Woodland Owners’ online series Virtual Forestry Information Sessions.
Ouellette will outline the 10 important things new woodland owners should know and do, such as walking their property, recording changes, challenges and achievements, as well as keeping track of their land, to avoid getting overwhelmed by the responsibility of stewarding their woods.
With the older generation aging out of their role of owning and managing their forests in large numbers, Maine is experiencing a massive turnover of forestland to a population who are new to woodland management. These owners need different types of information and resources than their predecessors, and this program will provide that, according to a news release from the organization.
“As a licensed forester with the Forest Service who visits and offers advice to many woodland owners in Maine, Ouellette will provide important information that new woodland owners need and will share her experience working with several new owners.” said Jenn Hicks, director of communications and outreach with Maine Woodland Owners.
The event, open to the public, is free for Maine Woodland Owners members. Non-members are asked to provide a suggested donation of $10.
