As a recipient of fuel assistance, I have a suggestion. Benefits from the Low Income Home Energy Assistance program, or LIHEAP, should be put on a debit card, similar to SNAP benefits, instead of paying directly to one oil company.
My current oil company’s prices are much higher than the local average, nearly $1 a gallon higher. I use 400 gallons of heating oil a year, and the ability to shop around would enable me to stretch those benefits much further.
Wouldn’t this be a much more efficient use of heating assistance?
