Maine will be awarded more than $38 million in funding for its Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program in 2024.
Sens. Susan Collins and Angus King and Reps. Chellie Pingree and Jared Golden announced the award on Tuesday.
“Over 45,000 Maine households rely in LIHEAP to stay safe and warm during the winter,” the Maine delegation said in a joint statement. “With home heating prices set to remain at near record levels in the coming months, it’s essential that this assistance continues to get to the families that need it most.”
Regular block grant appropriations will fund about $36 million of the allocation to Maine with over $600,000 of the 2024 funding to come from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law.
An estimated 6 million households nationwide receive assistance with heating and cooling costs through the program. LIHEAP is administered by states and accessed through local Community Action Agencies. Eligibility for assistance is based on income, family size and the availability of resources.
