FAIRFIELD — A man and woman were taken into custody Monday after a search of a Fairfield home turned up about a half-pound of fentanyl, evidence of drug trafficking and about 300 stolen items from burglaries reported previously to police, according to officials.

Officers spent about eight hours Friday documenting and collecting the stolen items, police said in an announcement to the news media. The items were found at a house at 44 Green Road.

Police said they arrested Johnathan Caswell, 38, and Randi Goldsmith, 35.

Caswell was held at the Somerset County Jail in Madison on charges of receiving stolen property and aggravated drug trafficking.

Goldsmith was charged with aggravated trafficking in scheduled drugs.

Both have posted bonds and been released.

Police went to the residence after receiving a complaint from a utility company about stolen electricity and the theft of a meter, according to officials.

Officers found evidence outside the home of drug trafficking, police said in the announcement.

Police obtained a search warrant and later found additional evidence of drug trafficking, according to officials. Caswell and Goldsmith were then taken into custody.

Caswell had an outstanding warrant for a probation revocation related to previous drug charges, police said. He was charged in 2020 with aggravated trafficking in scheduled drugs and criminal forfeiture after being found with 6 grams of fentanyl, 112 grams of cocaine and about $4,000 in cash, officials said at the time.

The investigation is expected to take several weeks as officers identify the owners of the stolen objects, according to police.

The announcement did not indicate the items that were found, and police did not respond to messages Monday for additional information.

Caswell and Goldsmith are scheduled to appear at a court hearing Jan. 10.

Fairfield police were assisted by officers from Waterville and Skowhegan and agents from the Maine Drug Enforcement Agency.
