Damariscotta’s River Arts seeks artists for ‘New Works’ show

DAMARISCOTTA — River Arts invites artists to submit work for the upcoming juried show “New Works.”

This exhibition will showcase artists’ recent fresh and contemporary works. Pieces that have been created in the last 12 months may be entered. This show is open to members and nonmembers alike.

“New Works” is open to all media, including original work in painting, sculpture, fiber, photography, ceramics, original print making, drawing, encaustic, pastel, glass, and mixed media. Artists can enter two pieces with a size limit of 24 inches (in any direction) including frame, or one piece with a size limit of 48 inches (in any direction) including frame.

Submissions can be delivered to the gallery until the deadline of 4 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 13.

“New Works” is set to run from Tuesday, Jan. 16, to Saturday, Feb. 24, at the 36 Elm St. gallery. The public is invited to the opening reception from 2-4 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 20. Hours are from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday.

Abbie Read, who will jury the exhibit and has a studio in Appleton, grew up making art on the campuses of Abbot Academy and Phillips Academy, in Andover, Massachusetts. She attended Oberlin College, where she earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in Studio Art and Art History, then later received her Master of Fine Arts degree at the University of Michigan School of Art. Read works in drawing and painting, printmaking, book arts, collage and sculptural constructions, according to a news release from the gallery.

Read’s work has been shown throughout New England including the Portland Museum of Art, the Portland Public Library, Lesley University College of Art & Design, Catamount Center for the Arts in Vermont, and Boston Sculptor’s Gallery, as well as in galleries throughout Maine and Boston. She has participated in the Art in Embassies Program with exhibitions in Doha, Qatar and Hong Kong.
