Robert J. Hammond Jr.

RICHMOND – Beloved wood carver and retired phone company worker Robert Joseph Hammond Jr. passed away peacefully on Dec. 1, 2023 after a short illness at the age of 88. He was surrounded by loved ones including his wife.

Robert was born in Kings Hospital in Bay Shore New York and graduated from South Huntington HS in 1953. He entered the Army in 1957, was honorably discharged in1963 and joined Western Electric to build a career working in Telecommunications (taking him to such far flung places as Saudi Arabia and Taiwan). Robert met Helen through his work whom he married on Dec. 1, 1964, (sharing 59 adventurous years together). Throughout his life Robert had a love of family, wood carving, archeology, science, space, traveling, gardening and nature (especially chipmunks). Robert is survived by his wife Helen, his three children Tina Bunker and her husband Tim, Gwen Hammond, Corey Hammond and his wife Christy, four grandchildren Jocelyn Thomas and her husband Brice and Isaac, Ian and Abigail Hammond and three great grandchildren, Cheyann, Chance and Ryland Thomas.

A small private family service will be held for Robert at the Maine Veteran’s Military Cemetery on Mt. Vernon Road in Augusta.

In lieu of flowers the family requests a small donation be made to The Nature Conservancy on his behalf.
