WINSLOW — Police have charged an Oakland man they say showed a gun while threatening to kill two men he was arguing with in public.
Alex I. Singleton, 32, of Hill Street, has been charged with threatening display of a weapon, aggravated reckless conduct and possession of a firearm by a prohibited person.
Winslow police Chief Jeff Fenlason said police were called to the scene of the altercation, which happened shortly before 10 a.m. Friday outside the Clinton Avenue residence of a woman who knows Singleton.
Two men who were in the woman’s home got into an argument with Singleton, and later they told police he had brandished a gun at them and threatened to “shoot their heads off,” Fenlason said.
By the time police arrived, Singleton had left on foot and was found a short time later in Waterville. A .25-caliber semi-automatic handgun was recovered during the investigation.
Fenlason said that Singleton was cooperative during the arrest.
Under Maine law, threatening display of a weapon is a class D crime, punishable by up to 364 days in jail and a $2,000 fine.
Singleton was not allowed to carry a gun because he has been convicted of felonies, Fenlason said, which led to the possession charge, a class C crime that carries a maximum penalty of five years in prison and a $5,000 fine.
The aggravated reckless conduct charge is the most serious charge, Fenlason said, a class B crime punishable by up to 10 years in prison and a $20,000 fine.
Singleton is scheduled to appear in Kennebec County Superior Court on May 28.
