The recent resignation of Wes Littlefield, Messalonskee coach, has me asking one question: Why did it take so long to get rid of him?
Littlefield always had a good group of talented players, but his record was around .500 in a soft division. Year after year, we heard the same story, “The double wing is almost there.”
I question the conditioning of his players, and if shutting out weak teams develops the depth a football program needs.
I would like to thank Messalonskee for sending us John Hersom and his wonderful family. The Hersoms coming to SAD 49 was a blessing.
I won’t weigh in on Littlefield’s recent assault charge, whether it was discipline or hard-nose coaching or whatever.
Two things are clear: Vince Lombardi couldn’t care less about Littlefield and his win-loss record, and if Littlefield was coaching Oxford Hills then I’d say .500 was a great job. With the talent he had at Messalonskee, however, he really didn’t provide the needed leadership.
