WAYNE — Twenty people, more than half of whom are under 18, are facing charges in connection with a drinking party Saturday off Kings Highway.
Eleven juveniles, the youngest of whom is 15, and nine adults were issued summonses on alcohol-related charges, including possession and consumption, Capt. Daniel Davies of the Kennebec County Sheriff’s Office said in a news release. The juveniles were released to the custody of their parents, who were called to pick the children up at the party.
Adults facing charges include three 18-year-old women, from Fayette and Readfield and Lewisberry, Pa.; two 18-year-old men, from Mount Vernon and Wayne; a 19-year-old Readfield woman; a 19-year-old Manchester man and two 20-year-old men, from Augusta and Winthrop. Police did not release the names of anyone charged.
Davies said one of the partygoers, a 16-year-old, registered a blood-alcohol content of 0.16, which is twice the legal driving limit for someone who can legally consume alcohol.
Kennebec County Sheriff Deputies and Maine State Police responded to a report of a large party and gunshots late Saturday night. Davies said the reported gunshots were likely fireworks.
Also responding were members of the Underage Drinking Task Force, including members of the Oakland Police and Kennebec County Sheriff’s Office, as well as the Maine Forestry Service, because of a bonfire at the party.
Davies said officials used beer to put out the fire. He said the partygoers were told to clean up the cans and bottles.
Davies said the charged will have an opportunity to participate in the Landowner Appreciation Clean-up Day, which allows offenders to perform community service in lieu appearing in court and facing financial penalties.
Kennebec inmate charged with assault
AUGUSTA — A city man accused of breaking into an apartment this spring and threatening two women inside faces a new charge of hitting a corrections officer at the Kennebec County jail.
Stephen D. Kirkley, 19, was charged Friday with assault on an officer, who suffered a minor injury when Kirkley punched him above the left eye, said Capt. Daniel Davies of the Kennebec County Sheriff’s office. Medical treatment was not required.
Kirkley was also charged with assault around 3 p.m. Sunday at the jail. Kirkley has faced several additional charges in recent weeks in connection with crimes allegedly committed inside the jail. On Aug. 9, Kirkley was charged with trafficking in prison contraband and refusing to sign a criminal summons. A few hours later he was charged with two counts of assault, two counts of terrorizing and one count of refusing to sign a criminal summons.
A Kennebec County grand jury in May indicted Kirkley and two other men with robbery, aggravated criminal trespass, criminal threatening, assault and theft in connection with an April 6 break-in at an apartment on Chase Avenue. Kirkley also was indicted on charges of refusing to submit to arrest and concealed weapon.
Police have said the three men broke into the apartment and threatened two women with knives and a gun.
1,200 lose power when car hits pole
BELGRADE — Nearly 1,200 homes and businesses were left without power when a utility pole was damaged in an accident Monday morning. Central Maine Power spokeswoman Gail Rice said 1,192 customers in Belgrade, New Sharon and Rome were without power from 5:30 to 7:30 a.m. Monday.
Rice said there were no injuries reported in the accident, which was on Route 27 just south of Belgrade Lakes village.
