It seems like every day that I pick up a newspaper, there’s at least one article about a man beating on a woman, or as the state calls it “domestic assault.” What’s so domestic about assault, anyway? It’s like asking what’s civil about war.

I remember when a families business/problems were hidden behind closed doors. Domestic violence is not a term that’s new to society. We didn’t hear about when I was a kid because women weren’t allowed to speak for themselves, and if they did, who would listen?

Men who beat women prey on the defenseless like a coward. If men can’t keep their hands to themselves, maybe women shouldn’t either.

Before I get a bunch of responses because I’m an inmate at Somerset County Jail in a high-profile case, let’s make it clear that all my charges are alleged. I’ve been with my fianceé eight years and never put a hand on her.

If this letter irritates you, then it’s probably directed to you.
